about

The first sound that is obviously not metallic comes from a cluster of chestnut shells attached to a bamboo handle with hemp-twisted rope. The second is from a plastic ratchet. A long all-thread rod (also mounted on a wood handle) allows the artist to play the edge of this large (28") wind gong with a ratchet-like appearance. Various lids to metal deco-art vases can also be used to attack the gong and also resonate themselves. A cardboard tube is a common device used to create friction on the surface without any danger of mutilating the metal. A turned and grooved wooden rod is also used on the edge, but with a much softer texture.
