about

The Moog synthesizer starts this one, and some soft sounds from cymbals and gongs are heard, some being bowed. Later, a vocal sound (not human) is heard as various metals brush against the tam tams and the oscillators pulsate patiently, waiting their turn to assault the senses. Bells are heard as cymbals give voice and popping corks propel themselves against a gong. The microphone is used as a sonic tool across the tam tam once again. The synthesizer seems, at times, to have more than two oscillators. Quiet listening is encouraged for this piece, as environmental sounds can be distracting and detracting from the ambience of the dynamics. Use a good sound system, as these instruments will test your speakers. Caution should be used with the volume control.

lyrics

How fast it comes, morning.
How swiftly the sunrise shatters the night.
How quickly the quiet blackness disperses
before the onslaught of the sun.

How soon, twilight.
How quickly the sun descends.
How quietly the day ebbs
as the soft mist of dusk rises.

(from "Cycle") by Michael David Gilley (1969)
