about

From the start, it is obvious that this is not a typical "gong" album. This first piece, being over eleven minutes in length, explores the awesome resonate sounds that are emitted from a large 48" Zildjian tam tam. Wood and metal objects are used to create various attack responses, as well as traditional beaters both soft and "hard". The typical implement used on a gong is usually chosen depending upon the size of the instrument being played. This particular instrument, made by the infamous Zildjian company, is no longer manufactured in this size. It is surprisingly thin and not as heavy as one would think, and although the sides are curved back to give the structure stability, it does have an abundance of "wobble". Ken avoids striking the center of the gong with much force, as the resulting wave of vibrations would distort most microphones. Instead, he chooses to play "quietly", bringing out the subtle nuances of each part of the tam tam: the surface near the center, far from the middle, and even the edge itself is explored and exploited for its dynamic qualities.
