about

This is an instrumental album, in a soundscape format, meaning there are no beats, melodies are unheard, and basically there are no traditional "notes" being played. The following contains Ken's quotes on the music:

"My first project with electronics complemented by metal was the ambient release titled, "Morning Creations". This was motivated by the concerts and albums that I did with my friend, Dave Vosh, who plays his modular synth on every occasion.

"With "Vast Din", I have been able to have total control over how the synthesizer is played and mixed within the Gong Room. My experiments with the Short Story, invented by Allen Myers, made its debut with the album, "Weather Ore Naught". I think that the melding of the various tam-tams with the smooth oscillators of Allen's marvelous invention was inevitable. Moreover, there are exclusive trio tracks, using only the Short Story, that have exceeded my expectations for pure electronic works.

"I have always loved the sound that cymbals and gongs can produce. This was made public with the release of my Heavy Metal Series 1-5. All the odd tracks on "Vast Din" are a marriage of the tam-tams' sounds with the multiple oscillators from the Short Story. The even tracks are "solo" stories, using three live recordings, with two takes panned hard left and hard right, leaving one in the center of the stereo field. This combination makes the Short Story synthesizer seem like an orchestra of oscillators.

"The six tracks on this album are just as much fun to hear on headphones as they are on your favorite speaker system. I have had a lot of pleasure recording these pieces, and it is my sincere wish that you will enjoy them as much, if not more, than I have.

"I have named each of the tracks here as the mood presented itself, after the recordings have been made. This has been a change from my old recording studio, which always forced me to give each project a name before it was completed."
